Two men feared dead in Essequibo river mishap

Two men are feared dead following a boat mishap in the Essequibo River on Tuesday.

According to Police reports, the men feared dead are Ravie Chutie, 50, of Eastern Hogg Island and Ozard Russell, 56, of Aliki Essequibo.

News Room understands that Janet Robinson, the wife of Chutie, reported to Police that around 13:00hrs on Tuesday, she and her husband along with Russel left the Hubu koker to head home by boat.

The woman said while on their way, they encountered difficulties when waves caused her husband to fall into the water.

She claimed that Russell, who was the captain of the boat, jumped to save his friend but neither of the men resurfaced from the water.

Robinson said the waves of the water then drifted the boat to land and she alerted persons in the area who set about searching for the men, but they were not found.

It is alleged that both men were under the influence of alcohol before they entered the boat.

Up to press time the men were found.

A police investigation is underway.
