Cuban doctor, wife jailed for fake passports

Alexie Vázquez and his wife Juliet Sanchez were sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for forging passports from Peru.

Vázquez, who is a Cuban doctor and his wife were charged separately; they both admitted to the charge which alleged that on February 13, 2019, at Moleson Creek, Corentyne, Berbice, with intent to defraud, they uttered forged Republic of Cuba passports to an Immigration officer, purporting to show that same was issued by the Peru Immigration Services.

According to reports, the couple arrived in Guyana legally via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri and were nabbed by immigration officers while attempting to travel to Suriname.

Vázquez, with the aid of an interpreter, told the court that he and his wife came to do shopping in Guyana and wanted to do the same in Suriname.

They will be deported to Cuba upon completion of their sentences.
