Bounty Farm Handicap Squash: Determined Da Silva overpowers Fernandes

Damien Da Silva worked up a steam to overcome the talented Taylor Fernandes in the Open Category of the Bounty Farm Handicap Squash Tournament at the Georgetown Club on Thursday evening.

With both players playing from even scores, the initial inclination was Fernandes, a Caribbean champion, would force her way to the desire result, a victory.

However, Da Silva came with a motive to play his shots and he did so brilliantly to top his counterpart.  He ousted her in two sets, 15-3, 15-6.

Alex Arjoon worked his way from a hefty -22 handicap against Ian Mekdeci (5) in a skillful match to secure a 15-12, 15-11 win, and Regan Pollard (-14) fought the much improved youngster Samuel Ince-Carvalhal (3) to a 15-14, 15-8 victory.

Ince-Carvalhal played hard, shot for shot in the first game and edged ahead early, but the experienced Pollard powered home with a run of 11 straight points to even out at 13-13.

Despite Ince-Carvalhal holding game ball in his hand at 14-13, Pollard bought it home to win 15-14. Pollard dominated the second game for a well-earned victory.

Steven Xavier (-10) took on David Fernandes (10) and won in a three-game showdown, and Ingram Edwards (8) defeated newcomer Wayne Alphonso (11) in two straight games.

Deje Dias (-10) gave a thrilling performance against Jonathan Antczak (6) in a three-game battle. Dias was triumphant 11-15, 15-14, 15-10.

In Category A, the contenders for the Plate stepped up after previous night’s defeats to make their bid for the consolation title. Notable performances came from Louis DaSilva, Arvin Seelall, Abhinav Singh and Aishani Persaud.

Action will continue on Friday evening from 18:00h.
