Youth snatched woman’s purse because he ‘owed man money’ – Court hears
Twenty-one-year-old Michael English of Subryanville, Kitty Georgetown was sentenced to nine months imprisonment by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for snatching a woman’s purse at Stabroek Market.
English pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on February 21, 2019, at Water Street, Georgetown in the company of another, he robbed Nasha Kumar of $171,000 cash along with an iPhone valued $100,000.
“I owe a man some money and I get a child that born the other day,” English told the court as his reason for committing the crime.
City Constabulary Prosecutor, David Goodman told the court that on the day in question, Kumar was going to the Stabroek Market to purchase medicine for her mother when English snatched her purse and escaped.
The victim gave chase and English was later arrested with the stolen items in his possession.
“You have to learn not to steal, people must be able to walk the road in peace,” the Chief Magistrate told English.
