100 years jail for 26-Y-0 found guilty of murdering elderly woman

High Court Judge Justice Navindra Singh on Tuesday sentenced a 26-year-old man to 100 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of killing a 77-year-old woman.

Colin Allen called ‘Bonus’ was found guilty of killing Danrise Ganesh called ‘Carmen’ on August 1, 2015, at Montrose, East Coast Demerara.

Ganesh’s body was found in a pool of blood in the kitchen of the bottom flat of the two-story Montrose house, where she was caretaker.

An autopsy revealed that she died as a result of strangulation and brain haemorrhaging as a result of the severe beating she received at the hands of her killer. The attack was caught on CCTV cameras in the house.

Evidence was led by State Prosecutor Tianna Harding, Abigail Gibbs and Teriq Mohamed. Allen was represented by Attorney-at-law Rachael Bakker.

Allen told the court that he is innocent and denied ever being in the woman’s house.

“I don’t think a man like you should ever see daylight again,” Justice Singh told Allen before sentencing.

“They say a picture is worth a 1000 words,” Justice Singh said as he explained that there were over 60 minutes of footage showing him committing the crime.

Justice Singh commenced Allen’s sentence at a base of 60 years. He then added 10 years for premeditation, another 10 years for excessive brutality, 10 years for a paid murder and another 10 years given the woman’s age and the fact that she could have barely walked.
