An elderly woman died in an early Friday morning fire, believed to be electrical in origin, at Non Pareil, East Coast Demerara. The woman has been identified as Rovena Hassan, 65.

The fire began just after midnight. The woman was living in the two-flat house owned by her daughter Shereeza and son-in-law Manzoor Rahaman at Lot 22 Non Pariel.

Police said that the electricity to the building was disconnected, but was subsequently reconnected on Thursday.

According to Police, the woman was last seen alive by her son Syed Hassan at about noon on Thursday.

It was about 01:00hrs, that residents saw the building engulfed in flames and the Guyana Fire Service was called in, with the Mahaica Fire Station responding.

The charred remains of the woman were found on the lower flat of the building and were later removed by Lyken funeral home. A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.
