Man says he thought ganja was ‘Achar’, jailed for 3 years

A 30-year-old man will be spending the next three years behind bars for the possession of cannabis possession after he told the court that he mistook the drugs for ‘Achar.’

Robert Bajnauth made his appearance before Magistrate Leron Daly and pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on March 6, 2019, at Charlestown, Georgetown he had 12 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The Court heard that a police patrol in the area observed Bajnauth acting in a suspicious manner at about 18:00hrs.

He was stopped and searched and the illegal drugs were found in a backpack in his possession.

In court, Bajnauth said, “I found it [drugs] on the side of the road and I decided to keep it because I thought it was Achar.”

He was sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $30,000.
