The Police in Berbice are currently hunting for a man who escaped from the Whim Police Station lock-up Monday afternoon.

Dinesh Sookram of Friendship Village, Corentyne Berbice had moments before appeared before a Magistrate at the Whim Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with break and enter and larceny.

He was placed on $200,000 bail but he was unable to pay the sum and as such he was at the lock-up awaiting transport to the New Amsterdam Penitentiary.

It is unclear how he was able to get past several officers including the Station Sergeant on duty.

News Room understands that Sookram is known to the Police and is the main suspect in a series of robberies in the Central Corentyne area.

When contacted, a senior Police source told the News Room that an investigation has been launched and stringent efforts are being made to capture the escapee.

Up until the publication of this article, Police Headquarters did not release an official statement on the escape.
