Violet Stephen, 28, a resident of St. Ignatius Village, Central Rupununi was on Sunday morning killed in an accident on the Tabatinga Public Road, Region Nine.

Police said Stephen was among seven persons standing in the tray of a motor Pick-up # PWW 9907 when the driver, a 32-year-old resident of Belfield, East Coast Demerara (ECD), lost control of the vehicle and toppled.

The police reported that at about 20:30hrs, the motor pick-up was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road at a fast rate when the driver lost control and the vehicle turned over on its left side.

Everyone in the tray were flung from the vehicle.

They were all picked up in a conscious state and taken to the Lethem Regional Hospital where two persons were admitted and Stephen died. The others were treated and sent away.

There were also three persons seated in the cab of the pickup.

The driver, who is a court clerk attached to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court and who was unhurt, is in custody and assisting with the investigation, police said.
