A fire of unknown origin claimed the life of Lucille Vanderhyden Mosley and completely destroyed her one-storey wooden home at Lot 84 First Avenue Bartica.

Police Headquarters said the fire occurred just after midnight on Monday.

The woman was 100 years old and lived alone in her house, while her 14-year-old grandson and his aunt, Sarah Vanderhyen lived in the same yard in a separate house.

News Room understands that Mosley’s grandson was awoken to his aunt screaming and realised that his grandmother’s house was engulfed in flames. The police report said the teenager tried to open the back and front doors of the house but it was futile.

The fire quickly spread and engulfed the wooden house.

After the fire was put out by the fire service, the charred remains of Mosley were found at the corner of the destroyed house.

The remains were taken to the Bartica Hospital Mortuary and an investigation is ongoing.
