Rena Devi Jagernauth, a 24-year-old waitress, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan Wednesday where she pleaded guilty to having 4.853 kilogrammes (11lbs) of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking on April 1, 2019, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).

Jagernauth, who told the court that she lives in Paramaribo Suriname, was sentenced to serve four years in jail and ordered to pay a fine of $13.1M.

The cocaine was found by ranks of the Police Narcotics Branch during a search of Jagernauth’s suitcase; she was an outgoing passenger on a COPA flight that was destined for Panama.

The cocaine was found stashed inside four children’s storybooks, deodorant and perfume bottles, a makeup kit and other personal items that were inside her suitcase.
