Berbice labourer dies after falling off truck

The driver of a canter truck is in Police custody following the death of 43-year-old Chetram Ramoutar who fell out from the back of the enclosed vehicle on Tuesday afternoon.

Police Headquarters revealed that the truck GKK 2071 was proceeding east along the Cotton Tree Public Road, West Coast Berbice when the door, which was not secured properly, flung open and the labourer fell out.

Ramoutar of 258 Railway Line, Rosignal, West Bank Berbice, was taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital in an unconscious state; he was treated and transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body is currently at the New Amsterdam hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The driver who passed a breathalyzer test is in police custody assisting with the investigation.
