Daniel France, a 27-year-old man of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, was given a three-year jail sentenced and fined $30,000 after he pleaded guilty to the possession of 25 grams of marijuana – less than an ounce – for the purchase of trafficking.

He was sentenced by Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

France said he had the illegal substance in his possession on April 13 at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

The unrepresented man told the court that he suffered a stroke in his right hand and would boil the cannabis to make tea.

Police prosecutor, Seon Blackman informed the court that France was arrested by Police on a mobile patrol who observed him acting in a suspicious manner.

The Police confronted France and conducted a search on him when they found the substance in his bag.

France told the court he is unemployed and got the drugs from an Uncle in Linden.
