Berbice woman jailed, 10 others arrested in major Police operation

Valencia Carmichael, a 37-year-old woman of Heatburn Village, East Bank Berbice (EBB) was sentenced to two years imprisonment Friday by Magistrate Peter Hugh for the possession of 484 grams (1.1lbs) of narcotics.

Police Headquarters said she appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to the charge shortly after she and ten others were detained during a stop and search operation in the New Amsterdam Station District between 04:00-08:30hrs Friday.

Police noted that two sets of narcotics weighing almost 11 kilograms (24.3lbs) and more than a GY$250,000, suspected to be proceeds from the sale of narcotics, were found during the operation.

According to the Police statement, the ten others, including another female, are being investigated for several offences, including possession of narcotics, discharging a loaded firearm and robbery under arms.

Eighty-three ranks were involved in the operation which was commanded by a Senior Superintendent, the statement noted.
