A fire of unknown origin which started at approximately 17:30hrs Monday completely destroyed a Sawmill in Spring Garden, Essequibo.
Police said the sawmill was owned by 55-year-old businessman Roophan ‘Fowl Cock’ Ramotar of Land of Plenty, Essequibo Coast, who is now counting his losses.
News Room understands that a 22-year-old man was walking home on Monday afternoon when he noticed fire emanating from inside the Sawmill and raised an alarm.
Residents formed a bucket brigade but were unable to control the huge blaze.
According to the Police, the fire service arrived an hour after the fire started and managed to contain it, however, the sawmill was already destroyed.
An eyewitness said the firefighters spent all night trying to contain the fire.
An investigation into the fire is ongoing.
