The partially decomposed body of a 60-year-old woman was found in a trench early Friday morning under a bridge in the Dispensary Dam at Port Mourant, East Berbice Corentyne.
She was identified as Diwantie Lakeraj known as ‘Christmas’ of Lot 66 Freeyard, Port Mourant.
The body was found facing downwards by passersby at approximately 06:00hrs.
Asodra Ramana, the victim’s sister told News Room she recognized the body based on the clothing; it was the same clothes Lakeraj left home with for church on Tuesday.
Ramana explained that her sister would usually wander around the area and people from the community would assist her daily with food.
“She does suffer from asthma and Alzheimer’s suh she does deh home then she does gone and walk whole day but she always does come back home,” Ramana told News Room.
The family said they find it strange that her body was found in that area, noting that Lakeraj has never crossed the bridge.
Her usual spot is the Port Mourant Market next to Spready’s.
A fellow Church member and a friend of Lakeraj said they both attended the Grace Fellowship Tabernacle Church in High Reef Albion on Tuesday.
The body was removed from the trench some three hours later and taken to the Bailey’s Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy.
