Former member of the Guyana Police Force Shawn Neblett, who is wanted in the United States for cocaine trafficking, is expected to be extradited to face a federal court abroad.

Neblett, formally of Community Lane, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown was recently nabbed by local authorities while attempting to flee to Suriname.

On Tuesday, Neblett was hauled before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where the local proceedings began.

A representative of the US Government, Stacy Gooding told the court that extradition proceedings in the US have already commenced for Neblett.

Gooding argued for Neblett to be remanded into the custody pending his extradition.

However, in court, Neblett denied fleeing to Suriname and explained that he was travelling legally. He said he did not know he was blacklisted until he was confronted by authorities.

Magistrate McGusty remanded Neblett and adjourned the matter until June 6, 2019, for report on the extradition.

According to reports, Neblett is wanted for his role in the 4,178 grams of cocaine bust at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri on January 24, 2017.

The suspected drug was found in four parcels hidden in a suitcase.
