Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Friday remanded two men to prison for allegedly breaking into the home of a Kumaka Waterfront, Mabaruma, North West District businessman and stealing over $1.5M worth in cash and items.

Leon Singh, a 25-year-old vendor and John Peters, a 24-year-old handyman both of Mabaruma, pleaded not guilty to the joint charge.

It is alleged that between May 4 – 5, 2019 at Kumaka Waterfront, they broke and entered the dwelling house of Dwayne Payne and stole USD$ 5,000 (GYD$ 1M), GYD $330,000, a CCTV camera along with other items totalling $1.5M.

The duo was represented by Attorney-at-law Mark Conway, who made an application for reasonable bail.

Police Prosecutor Tracy Gittens objected to bail citing the amount of money involved.

The Prosecutor explained that Singh is a known felon and has an ongoing break and enter case before the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court.

The Chief Magistrate remanded the duo to prison until May 21 and transferred the matter of the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court.
