Guyana Overseas-Based Sports Association (GOBSA) will host the fourth edition of their annual Independence Track and Field Championship this weekend, with over 270 athletes set to compete.

The two-day meet will be held at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora, West Coast Demerara.

So far, 273 athletes have been registered and more are expected to join. According to President of Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), Aubrey Huston, the numbers suggest it will be good competition.

Identifying talent is one of the main aims of the meet as Guyana is set to host the 2021 CARIFTA Games. Orin Thomas, a member of GOBSA, noted that developing talents starts from now.

Vice-President Gordon Lewis stated they are proud of the gifted Anisha Gibbons, Under-17 Javelin Gold medallist at the recent CARIFTA Games, and donated two javelins to aid in her training.

Guyana Police Force (74 athletes), Hopetown Flames of West Berbice (24 Athletes), New Amsterdam (12 athletes), Running Brave (58 athletes), Ruralites (9 athletes), Super Upcoming Runners (19 athletes), Titans United of East Bank (3 athletes), University of Guyana (13) and Upper Demerara Schools (23) have confirmed their participation in the event.

Andrew Forester Lumber, Banks DIH Limited, National Sports Commission and Guyana Community of Service are the notable sponsors.
