A 39-year-old woman was Thursday night stabbed to death by her husband in the town of Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast.
The woman has been identified as Farida Khayum. The couple lived together for about 10 years, relatives said.
The two lived with two of the woman’s children from a previous relationship.
According to reports, the incident occurred at around 22:00 hrs.
Kayum’s sick mother, Golin Harduwar, also lived in the house. Harduwar, who incapacitated because of a stroke, said all she heard was her daughter screaming “Meh dead, Meh dead, Meh dead.”
One of Kayum’s young sons said his mother was standing next to the kitchen sink when her reputed husband, identified as Devanand Narine, approached from behind and stabbed her to the neck using a knife. When she fell to the ground, he then continued stabbing her.
Narine then reportedly turned the knife on himself, stabbing his hands several times. He then ingested a poisonous substance. He was taken to the hospital where he is under Police guard.
Kayum’s father, Abdool Kayum, was murdered at the same house in 1994.
