Two female prisoners appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for injuring each other during a fight at the East La Penitence Police Station Holding Centre.
Savita Persaud, who is currently on remand for two charges of trafficking in-person and Revelana Smith, who is also on remand for attempted murder, both pleaded not guilty.
Persaud is charged with assaulting Smith on April 23, 2019, while Smith is accused of unlawfully wounding Persaud on the same day in question.
In court, Persaud told the Magistrate that she was attacked by Smith and defended herself, however, Smith explained that the incident stemmed at the New Amsterdam Prison and became physical when they arrived at the East La Penitence Police Station.
“She [Persaud] punch me so I fight back,” Smith told the court.
Smith alleged that Persaud receives conjugal visits from a male Police Officer and gets special treatment at the prison.
Prosecutor Ceon Blackman objected to bail being granted to the defendants on the grounds that they showed no respect for the law.
Persaud was granted $20,000 bail while Smith was remanded.
Persaud, however, will remain on remand, since she was not granted bail on her trafficking charges.
The matters are adjourned to June 24, 2019.
