In another tangible demonstration of its commitment to the development of sport in Guyana, Continental Group of Companies on Tuesday morning renewed its long-standing corporate partnership with the Lusignan Golf Club for the annual golf tournament.
Through the renowned Torginol Paints Inc., the company has for the 16th year, exclusively sponsored a one-day competition, billed for June 1 at the country’s lone golf course at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.
The symbolic presentation of the sponsorship cheque was done at the company’s headquarters at Industrial Estate, Ruimveldt, involving President of the Lusignan Golf Club Aleem Hussain and company officials.
Hussain said Continental Group of Companies has always been a faithful partner to golf, and that is demonstrated through the strong alliance that has been developed over the years.
“The Course is in absolutely magnificent condition, thanks to the help we received last year from Torginol and the other affiliates of them. We were able to upgrade the Course in terms of drainage and performance-wise,” Hussain remarked.
Hussain posited that golfers will adopt a similar approach to Torginol, which he pointed out has a special formula to beat the harsh weather conditions in Guyana and stay top of the competition.
Administrative Assistant of Continental Group of Companies, Rajesh Ramgolam, spoke of the entity’s delight to once again provide an avenue for the country’s golfers to excel.
“Torginol Paints is very proud to be part of the tournament. Over the years, we’ve seen the tournament being a part of the fixture of the Club and we will be here to support them this year.”
The tournament is expected to tee-off at 12:30h, with top players Dr. Joaan Deo, Patrick Prashad, William Walker, Troy Cadogan, Clifford Reis, Maurice Solomon, Mike Mangal, Kassim Khan and Aleem Hussain, along with an exciting group of up and coming talents set to participate.
‘Sugar’ wins
At the 2018 competition, Kassim ‘Sugar’ Khan emerged champion, topping a field of 28 golfers.
Khan, a two-time runner-up of the prestigious Guyana Open, had the best Net of 68, edging out Pandit Ravi Persaud, who recorded a Net 69. 2011 Guyana Open champion Papo Haniff finished third with Net 72, while Kalyan Tiwari rounded off the top four finishers with Net 73.
Khan also had the best Gross of the day, recording 78. Persaud was Nearest-to-the-Pin, while Robin Tiwari had the Longest Drive.
