Fireman charged with causing death of wife

A 27-year-old member of the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was on Friday charged for causing the death of his reputed wife, Abidacy Klass who was killed during a motorcycle accident at 1-11 Miles, Mahdia, Potaro Road in Region 8.

Osafo Bess of 1-11 Miles Mahdia appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving.

The court heard that on May 20, 2019, at -11 Miles Mahdia, Bess rode motorcycle CH 3715 in a dangerous manner in the public, which resulted in the death of 24-year-old Klass.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield did not object to bail but requested that the accused report to the Mahdia Police Station every Friday until the completion of the trial.

Prosecutor Mansfield told the court that on the day in question, Klass was the pillion rider on the motorcycle which was being driven by Bess at a fast rate of speed. It is alleged that Bess lost control of the motorcycle and crashed.

Klass was thrown off of the motorcycle; public-spirited citizens rushed the duo to the Mahdia Public Hospital where Klass was pronounced dead on arrival while Bess suffered minor injuries.

Neither of them were wearing helmets at the time.

The Chief Magistrate released Bess on $150,000 bail and suspended his driver’s licence.

The matter was transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for July 16, 2019.
