Yannick Janniere known as Kayzim of Stewartville, West Coast Demerara (WCD) drowned in the Cuyuni River, Region Seven on Wednesday last.
Police said initial investigations revealed that the 28-year-old miner along with other workers were transporting their employer’s dredge and other equipment onto a pontoon, however, at about 08:00hrs, as the pontoon was about to begin the journey, the rope of a boat which was tied to the said pontoon burst and drifted downstream.
Police said Janniere jumped into the water and began swimming towards the drifting boat but at about 200 meters away from the pontoon, he went under water.
Several workers noticed what occurred and raised an alarm while one worker jumped into the river and began to dive to find the victim but he was unable to.
The matter was reported to the Bartica Police Station and several divers began searching for Janniere. His body was recovered and a post mortem was done on Friday by Government Pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh which determined he died from drowning.
