3 years jail for armed robbery of Stabroek Market vendors

A 26-year-old Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, resident was on Friday sentenced to a total of 13 years imprisonment for the armed robberies committed on three vendors outside of the Stabroek Market along with two firearm related charges.

Joshua Joseph appeared before City Magistrate Leron Daly and confessed to the five charges when it was read to him.

But he will only serve three years imprisonment after the Magistrate ordered that the charges run concurrently.

Particulars of first three charges alleged that on May 29, 2019 at Stabroek Market, Joseph while being in the company of another and armed with a gun, robbed Satyanand Deosarran, Zabid Amin Baksh and Parsram of a total of $115,000.

The last two charges state that on the same day and location, Joseph had a .38 revolver along with four matching rounds in his possession, when he was not a license firearm holder.

The Magistrate sentenced Joseph to three years imprisonment for each of the armed robbery charges and two years jail each for the firearm related charges.

According to a Police reports, at about 02:10 hrs on May 29, 2019, Police were on patrol in the Stabroek Market area and responded to a robbery committed on three vendors.

The Police managed to apprehend Joseph as he was being attacked by dogs, while his accomplice named ‘Awara’ managed to escape.

Joseph was searched and the firearm was found in his possession.
