Seasoned campaigner Regan Pollard and the talented Sarah Lewis were among the winners on the opening night of the KFC Senior Squash Championships at the Georgetown Club Courts on Wednesday.
Playing in the Veterans Over-40 category, Pollard dispatched of Robert Fernandes in three straight sets (11-3, 11-5, 11-6). For both, fitness took a toll, but they still produced some well-placed shots, drawn from their reservoir of experience.
After the tiring ordeal, Pollard related to News Room Sport he felt he had more sets in him, but is conscious he has to improve on fitness ahead of the Caribbean Area Squash Association Senior Championships, which Guyana hosts from August 18-24.
Lewis played a splendid hand in a mostly one-sided match, storming to an 11-0, 11-1, 11-0 triumph over Teja Edwards. Likewise, Nicholas Verwey dominated Regan Rodrigues 11-3, 11-5, 11-4.
Adam Alves prevailed over Gianni Carpenter in the only match of the night which took more than three sets. Alves came from behind and won 8-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-7.
Samuel Inc-Carvalhal made light work of Jonathan Antczak 11-6, 11-4, 11-8. Matches continue on Thursday evening from 17:30h, with the culmination being Saturday.
