Man dies after Mayor’s vehicle crashes into him; speeding driver claims he fell asleep

Fifty-three-year-old Mitford Cambridge of Middle Walk, Buxton East Coast Demerara (ECD) died on Wednesday afternoon at the Georgetown Public Hospital a day after the vehicle assigned to the Mayor of Georgetown, Ubraj Narine crashed into his parked car on the Turkeyen Public Road, ECD.

At the time of the accident, the Mayor was not in the vehicle, however, a Police report noted that the driver, 42-year-old Joel Bond told the cops that he fell asleep when the vehicle PTT 8909 collided with the concrete median on the southern side of the road in front of MovieTowne.

The Mayor’s driver further noted that he then lost control and crashed into three cars which were parked on the southern concrete pavement.

Police said that Bond was speeding at the time of the accident. The victim Cambridge was seated in the driver’s seat of PHH 1846 when the Mayor’s vehicle crashed into the parked car.

Police said Cambridge was taken out of the vehicle in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was admitted in the High Dependency Unit. He died at around 15:45hrs Wednesday.

The News Room understands that the Mayor’s driver remains in Police custody; he was tested negative for alcohol in his system.
