Man charged for pushing granny to ground, robbing her of $600

A 25-year-old man accused for robbing an elderly woman and stealing a bicycle was on Friday hauled before City Magistrate Leron Daly and charged for the offences.

Akeem Kurt, called Kerron Williams of William Street, Kitty, Georgetown pleaded not guilty to both charges and was released on a total of $65,000 bail.

The first charge alleged that Kurt on June 19,2019, at William Street, Kitty stole a bicycle valued $15,000 from Jamal Cummings.

The second charge read that on the same day and location, Kurt rob Joan Bailey of a $1,000 handbag, a $1,000 umbrella and $600 cash with the use of personal violence.

Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh told the court that on the day in question, Kurt stole a bicycle and rode up to Bailey, 64, and grabbed her bag.

It is alleged that Kurt pushed the elderly woman to the ground and made good his escape with her bag.

However, the victim raised an alarm and public-spirited person managed to apprehend Kurt.

Magistrate Daly released Kurt on $15,000 bail for the larceny charge and $50,000 bail for the robbery offence.

He was also ordered to report to the Kitty Police Station every Monday; the matter was adjourned to July 26, 2019.
