President David Granger will on Thursday meet with Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo on the appointment of a new Chair for the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

This will be the first meeting between the two leaders since the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) ruled on June 18 that the President breached the Constitution of Guyana when he unilaterally appointed the  GECOM Chair in 2017. The CCJ on that day also ruled that the December 21, 2018 No-confidence motion against the Government was validly passed.

Director General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon in a letter to Opposition Chief Whip, Gail Teixeira on Wednesday said the meeting will be at the Ministry of the Presidency at 15:00hrs.

The letter was released to the media by the Ministry’s press and publicity unit.

His letter dated July 03 came in response to a letter from Teixeira on June 25 informing the President that the Opposition Leader is available to meet with him “at any time, and, on a daily basis if needs be, to address the appointment of a new Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission consistent with the ruling of the Caribbean Court of Justice on June 18, 2019.”

Her letter was sent one day after Justice Ret’d James Patterson left the post on June 24 in accordance with the CCJ ruling.
