The future of Guyana’s table tennis will be on display this weekend when the Guyana Table Tennis Association hosts the National Mini and Pre-Cadet Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The weekend of June 15 was initially slated to be hosting of the championships, but constraints with venue and examinations hampered those endeavours.
The stage is now set for the likes of Jasmine Billingy, Akira Watson, Samara Sukhai, Deja Datt, Tatyana Mohamed, Rozeanna Saunders to challenge for the crown of national pre-cadet champions in the Girls’ 11 and 13 years and under division.
In the Boys’ division, Malachi More and Jonathan Van Lange will make their case for the 13 years and under category. Van Lange won the national championship in the 15 and 17 years under in March.
Their aim will be to produce the fireworks to gain a spot on the national team for the regional championships, which will be held in Dominican Republic from August 19-27.
On July 8, there will be junior cadet championships, which caters for 15 years and under and 18 years and under for both Boys’ and Girls’ division.
GTTA President Godfrey Munroe, in an invited comment, noted the importance of staging these championships since it helps unearth new talents and helps the association build towards having a strong core of youth players.
Action on both days starts at 09:00h, with the finals from 13:30h on Sunday.
