‘Legacy’ jailed, fined $2.4M for cocaine trafficking

Wynette Amsterdam known as ‘Legacy’ was on Tuesday sentenced by Magistrate Sherdel Isccas-Marcus to two years, three months imprisonment and slapped with a $2.4M fine for cocaine trafficking.

The 32-year-old promoter was on trial at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for being in possession of 1.160 kilograms (three pounds) of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking on October 17, 2018, at the Stabroek Market Square in the vicinity of Lodge Bus Park, Georgetown.

He was found guilty at the end of the trial Tuesday and sentenced immediately.

Amsterdam of Land of Canaan Public Road, East Bank Demerara was on remand during the trial; the matter was prosecuted by Narissa Leander of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU).

CANU said that Amsterdam and another male were under surveillance when they were intercepted.

Amsterdam was caught with the cocaine and $600,000 in cash inside a haversack he had in his possession.
