Guyana’s aspiration to qualify in rugby at the 2020 Olympic Games was shattered at the weekend with the national men’s side losing all their round-robin matches in the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens Championships in the Cayman Islands.
The Green Machine, as they are called, went down 7-19 to Trinidad and Tobago, 12-14 against the host and 7-42 against 2018 champions Jamaica. They then lost to eventual champions Canada 5-42.
Some fortune came in the Plate matches when they won 17-12 against Trinidad and Tobago. The Guyanese were then defeated by the host in the Plate final 10-21.
Canada defeated Jamaica 40-5 in the Men’s final, while Mexico took the Women’s title by edging Jamaica 19-15.
