Gold for Alphonso and Gomes at Junior CASA

Guyanese pair Michael Alphonso Jr. and Kirsten Gomes on Tuesday won gold in their Under-15 finals at the ongoing Junior Caribbean Squash Championships in Trinidad and Tobago.

Alphonso, who won gold at the Under-13 level in 2018, produced another sublime act to top compatriot Nicholas Verwey at Queen’s Park Oval. Sponsored by E-Networks, Fat Boy Coconut Water and KFC, Alphonso won in three straight sets 11-9, 11-9, 11-6.

For Gomes, her battle was more attritional as it went the full distance against Barbadian Sumairaa Suleman. The game ended 4-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-4, 11-8.

In the Under-11 category, Christiana Fernandes lost the final 9-11, 11-13, 5-11 to Phoebe Gittens of Barbados, while Under-13 star Mohryan Baksh went down in a nail-biting final to Trinidad’s Seth Thong 9-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-2, 11-13. Louis DaSilva finished fourth in the category.

Three other Guyanese are in final- Madison Fernandes and Abosaide Cadogan will clash in the Girls Under-17 from 17:40h, followed by Shomari Wiltshire and Barbadian Darien Benn from 18:20h.
