Guinness Streetball: Georgetown Zone Group matches kick off Friday

The National Cultural Centre Tarmac is the venue for tonight’s group stage round in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Georgetown Championship.

Rising Stars will do battle with North East La Penitence at 19:00h in the opening match, with Charlotte Street tackling Albouystown B at 19:30h and LA Ballers opposing Broad Street from 20:00h.

In the fourth fixture, Leopold Street will match skills with Albouystown A from 20:30h, while Tiger Bay engages Future Stars at 21:00h and defending champions Gold is Money face-off with John Street from 21:30h.

The final two matches of the night will put Back Circle against Sophia from 22:00h and Sparta Boss against Alexander Village at 22:30h.

According to an official release from the tournament coordinator Three Peat Promotions, “This year’s group stage round promises to be the most exciting and competitive in recent memory, as several high profile teams are pitted against each other. Most of the matches can be considered dream match-ups and as such, the fans will be treated to an outstanding level and quality of play heading into the knockout rounds.”

The group stage, which will last for three nights, will end on July 26. The top two finishers from each pool will advance to the quarter-finals and subsequent semi-final round on July 27.

The grand finale is pegged for August 3.

The eight teams that fail to advance from the group round will contest the Guinness Plate Championship.

Winner of the event will collect $500,000 and the championship trophy, with the second, third and fourth place finisher copping $300,000, $200,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding trophy.

They will also earn an automatic berth in the National Championship in August.

Action will then move to Berlin Tarmac located at High and Drydale Streets, Charlestown, on Saturday (July 20) then the final night of round-robin action returns to the Cultural Centre Tarmac on July 26.
