Well-known mechanic ‘Diesel Boss’ gunned down

Family and residents are in a state of shock following the brutal murder of a 44-year-old mechanic who was gunned down in his Guyhoc Park, East La Penitence, Georgetown home at around 04:00hrs Saturday.

Dead is Reginald ‘Reggie’ Atherly popularly known as ‘Diesel Boss’ who owned and operated a mechanic shop at his lot G26 Guyhoc Park house.

His mother, 66-year-old Ingrid Atherly told the News Room Saturday morning that she was asleep in the front house of the yard when she and her daughter were awoken by the sound of rapid gunfire.

She recalled hearing 15 gunshots. Mrs Atherly initially thought it was a neigbour who was being robbed but then she heard her daughter-in-law screaming “Ms Atherly, Ms Atherly come your son get shoot!”

“When I went, he was already gone,” the grieving mother said.

Her son lived in the back house of the same yard.

According to the reputed wife, Marlyn, the two gunmen wore masks to cover half of their face; they gained entry by removing the louvred windows, found the keys to the house and unlocked the doors.

Mrs Atherly said, according to the reputed wife, Reginald confronted the gunmen in the hallway of the house when he was shot at point-blank range multiple times.

Residents rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The gunmen did not demand any money or valuables.

“They didn’t ask for money, gold, nothing at all, so it’s not a robbery. That is definitely not a robbery,” the mother told the News Room.

Mrs Atherly could not say whether her son had issues with anyone, “but as far as I know he live good with people, he live good with his customers.”

She described her son as a willing and kind person.

“He was a loving, kind person. Everybody know him. He is always willing to lend a helping hand in every way.  If he gotta leave himself undone to help you, he would,” the mother said.

She noted that Reginald has been operating his mechanic shop for some three years now but he has been a mechanic for most of his life.

He has five children from a previous relationship, including a 9-year-old daughter who lives at the same address.

Police Headquarters are yet to issue an official statement on the murder as investigations are ongoing.
