Police are investigating the death of a 60-year-old woman of One Mile Arakaka, North West District, Region One.

Dead is Retta Samuels who was ‘punting’ with others in the Locus Backdam on Friday afternoon when the mining pit caved in.

Police Headquarters revealed that the incident occurred between 15:30hrs and 16:00hrs at the mining pit owned by a 45 year-old gold miner who at that time was washing down his (4inch) land dredge.

The pit reportedly caved in and trapped Samuels below the mud and water for some time.

She was rushed to the Arakaka Health Centre where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body is presently at the Arakaka Health Centre Mortuary and arrangements are being made for it to be transported to the Port Kaituma Hospital Mortuary for a post mortem examination.
