A seven-year-old girl is in a critical state at the Georgetown Public Hospital after she was severely burnt during a fire that destroyed her family’s house at North Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara Sunday night.

Shaniya Persaud received second and third-degree burns to more than 75% of her body, the News Room was told.

The News Room understands that the 37-year-old mother left the child at home with her two older brothers – ages 13 and 9 – while she attended a wedding in the community.

According to reports reaching the News Room, when the fire erupted in the one-storey wooden structure, the two boys ran out of the house and left the little girl sleeping.

Residents said that the boys ran to the wedding house to inform the mother of the fire while a neighbour rescued the little girl.

The children’s father is reportedly out a sea.

The cause of the fire is not yet known and the Police are investigating.
