The Police in ‘A’ Division have arrested one person in connection with the robbery of three enumerators attached to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

This was confirmed by Commander of ‘A’ Division, Marlon Chapman on Monday.

GECOM’s Public Relations Officer, Yolanda Ward told the News Room that the staff were robbed on Sunday morning at Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara.

They were relieved of their personal belongings along with registration forms and other documents belonging to GECOM by a male armed with a knife.

At the time of the incident, the officers were conducting the ongoing House to House registration exercise.

According to reports, the lone bandit was chased and beaten by residents who recovered the stolen items in his possession, however, the suspect managed to escape and was apprehended by the Police on the same day.

Following threats to its employees, GECOM on Wednesday last said it is seeking police protection for its officers.

Ward said the Commission is still engaging the Guyana Police Force on the matter but whenever reports are made, the Police responds promptly.

The House to House registration began on July 20 and is set to conclude on October 20.
