Under the guidance of national coach Gokarn Ramdhani, a five-member national badminton team has departed Guyana to compete in the Caribbean International Badminton Championship (CAREBACO) at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Barbados.

The event, which will see rivalry at the senior and junior levels, will be held from August 15-25.

The Guyanese would be buoyed by their performance at the 2018 championship in Suriname where they won a total of 13 medals, consisting of five gold, two silver and six bronze.

Guyana would be represented in the Under-19 Junior and Open International by reigning CAREBACO Under-19 championship and Open runner-up Priyanna Ramdhani, national junior champions Tyrese Jeffrey and Akili Haynes, national senior champion and 2018 CAREBACO bronze medallists Narayan Ramdhani and Jonathon Mangra.

Guyana would be up against competitors from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, Jamaica, Panama, Canada, USA, Finland, Italy, Poland, Iceland, Luxembourg, Slovakia, England, Mongolia and Germany.

CAREBACO is an Olympic Qualifier event where one of the aims of players is to increase their world ranking points.

Guyana’s trip was made possible with support from the National Sports Commission, Demerara Bank, Nevell Osman, SOL Guyana, Ayanna Watson, Gaico, Komal Singh, DaSilva’s Optical and the Guyana Olympic Association.
