Guyana records best performance at this year’s CSEC exams

Guyana has recorded a 73% overall pass rate in grades one to three at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations. This is the best performance the country has seen with 11, 467 students who wrote the exams.

Last year’s pass rate was 69.1%.

The Ministry of Education on Wednesday announced the results at the National Centre for Education Resource Development (NCERD) in Kingston Georgetown.

Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry said, “I think that this has been a very good year for us in terms of our examination performance.”

The Education Minister believes that education is certainly on a good path.

There was an evident improvement in 21 subject areas, while seven subjects remained constant and another seven performed better when compared to last year.

“Outstanding performance were noted in 13 subjects area where 90% and over gained grades 1 – 3. Some subjects with outstanding performances were Agricultural Science (double award) with 99%, religious education with 100%, information technology with 98%, physical education and sports with 100% and industrial technology/electrical with 93.4%,” Minister Henry said.

While English ‘A’ recorded an improved pass rate of 77% this year, as compared to 67% last year, Mathematics remained constant with 43% pass rates for 2018 and 2019.

However, there was an increase in Additional Mathematics from 68.4% last year, to 80% this year.

There was also increased pass rates in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Office Administration, Principles of Account and Principles of Business; Geography, Food and Nutrition, Visual Arts, Portuguese and Spanish.

The subjects that saw a decrease in pass rates are Caribbean History, Clothing and Fashion, Human and Social Biology and Integrated Science.

Family and Resource Management, Industrial Technology Building, Electrical and Mechanical, French, Theatre Arts and Electronic Document Preparation and Management remained constant.

Among the top schools in the country are Anna Regina Secondary School, Queens College, St Rose’s High, Swarswati Vidya Niketan, Abram’s Zuil Secondary, Tagore Secondary, Mae’s Secondary, Diamond Secondary, St Stanislaus College, Skeldon Line Path Secondary and ISA Islamic Academy.
