One of the country’s top performers at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination is16-year-old Amisha Ramdin who decided to write 20 subjects with the aim of proving that hinterland students can perform just as well as students on the coastland.
Amisha, who attended the St. Ignatius Secondary School, gained 15 grades ones and five grade twos; she is the top-performing student in Region Nine.
“With our school areas in far communities and not in Georgetown, they are always underestimated so I wanted to put that ideology to a stop, I wanted to show my people and other students that you are just as good, it doesn’t make a difference,” Amisha told the News Room Thursday during a telephone interview.
Amisha has made her community, fellow hinterland and the country proud. But she is even more proud of herself.
“I am really proud of myself, I am very happy that I made everyone proud of me.”
She did not expect to be among the top performers in the country.
“On a certain level, I was a bit scared to be honest but yeah I sorta expected to do well, that was my mission to make my people proud,” she said.
Amisha is an aspiring Pediatric Surgeon and plans to return to her community when she finishes her studies.
“I’ve always been inspired by the medical field and I also love children and I want to help people,” she told the News Room.
Amisha said she has always been a top performer throughout her primary and secondary education and does not intend to stop there.
She is currently applying for CAPE studies in the city and will further move on to university.
Amisha’s success was not without struggle; she said it was difficult and she wanted to give up many times, but she pushed through, attended all her classes and did extra research.
“It was challenging, I’m not going to lie…I felt like giving up but I ensured that I did all of my SBAs and just stayed focused, I slept a lot and ate well.”
“I want to thank everybody who supported me, and the Almighty and my mom and thanks to all my teachers,” the proud 16-year-old said.
