Badminton: Guyanese capture five gold medals at CAREBACO 2019

Guyana’s badminton players gave a good account of themselves in the 2019 CAREBACO Junior Under-19 International Championship, copping five gold medals and a bronze at the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium in St. Michael, Barbados.

“The outstanding Guyanese players won three of the five finals and their performances of the players show that our preparation and training methods were executed as instructed and planned. The players were very focused and their determination was only to win,” the Guyana Badminton Association said in a statement.

Last year champion Priyanna Ramdhani, who was the number one seeded player in the tournament, won three gold medals in the Ladies Singles, Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles and was crowned the Triple Champion at the age of 17.

She was also the Triple Champion in the Under-17 category last year.

Tyrese Jeffrey was Guyana’s other gold medallist, topping the field in the Mixed Doubles and Men’s Doubles, while Akili Haynes copped bronze in the Men’s Doubles.

Ladies Singles: Priyanna Ramdhani of Guyana defeated Imani Mangroe of Suriname in a thrilling three-setter 21-8, 18-21, 21-17

Mixed Doubles: Priyanna Ramdhani and Tyrese Jeffrey of Guyana defeated Dominick Scantlebury and Sobers Robyn 21-11, 21-9

Ladies Doubles: Priyanna Ramdhani of Guyana and Chequeda De Boulet of Trinidad defeated Imani Mangroe and Chaista Soemodipoero of Suriname 21-18, 21-11.
