Repair works to the Wakenaam road is 50% completed, the Ministry of Public Infrastructure has reported.
During the month of June, Minister David Patterson visited the island and pledged to mobilize a team from the Ministry’s Special Projects Unit (SPU) to conduct an assessment on the roads and to transport the Demerara Habour Bridge Corporation (DHBC) Mobile Asphalt Plant to the Island.
On Wednesday, Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure Jaipaul Sharma and a team visited the island to inspect the stockpile area and the current progress of works.
To date, three contractors have provided 2,100 tonnes of crusher run materials. These are Toolsie’s Persaud Limited, BK Limited and Barakara to the tune of $5.3 million, $5.1 million and $5.3 million respectively.
The grading, leveling and the application of crusher run fabrication began from Wakenaam’s Transport and Habours Ferry Stelling to Sans Socui junction. Then it continued from Noitgedacht Crossroad to Maria’s Pleasure then west of the island to Free & Easy then back to Sans Socui junction.
This will be completed with the application of 2 inches of asphalted concrete on the road’s surface.
Minister Sharma stated that the asphaltic mixture will be poured as of Friday.
The Ministry’s Regional Engineer, Mr. Harry Lall shared with the visiting team that the residents for the past weeks have expressed thanks to the Ministry for the progress of works done to date as they anticipate the completion of the repair works.
