While Vanguard had a rocky start, they recovered well to win the National Sports Commission’s Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham memorial female volleyball festival at the weekend.

Four teams- Vanguard, Pakuri Warriors and PMTC females had a starting six, while Castrol only had five players- on Saturday last at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

The format for the competition was that the two lower teams- Pakuri and PMTC- would pull to see which team they would play. After the draw, it was Vanguard versus PMTC and Castrol against Pakuri.

In the opening game, Vanguard played PMTC and lost 19-25. Castrol, playing with five players against Pakuri’s six, lost 24-30. Castrol then played PMTC and won in two straight sets.

This was followed by Vanguard beating Pakuri two sets to one (25-20, 23-25, 15-9). It was then determined that Pakuri and PMTC would play for third place and Vanguard and Castrol would play for the title.

In the third place clash, Pakuri won in straight sets against PMTC. In the final, Castrol finally had six players, but could not stave off Vanguard, who won in straight sets, 27-25, 25-20.
