CID officer charged for beating man during cemetery brawl

A member of the Guyana Police Force was on Wednesday charged before City Magistrate Leron Daly for inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Thirty-two-year-old Lance Corporal Colwin Major of La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on $40,000 bail.

According to Police, Major, on May 4, 2019, at Le Repentir Cemetery, unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm to Warren Duke.

According to reports, Major, who is attached to the Criminal Investigation Department, was involved in a heated argument with Duke. It is alleged that Major became annoyed and dealt Duke several lashes about his body.

Police Prosecutor Richard requested that the defendant keep away from the victim since they are known to each other.

The Magistrate, after listening to the Prosecutor, released Major on bail and adjourned the matter to September 26, 2019.
