A 37-year-old fisherman appeared before Magistrate Marissa Mittelholzer at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court charged with having an illegal firearm in his possession.

Deocharan Das of New Providence, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on August 26, 2019, at Wash Clothes, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, he had a 12-gauge single barrel shotgun when he is not a licensed firearm holder.

Das, who did not have legal representation, was remanded to prison until September 30, 2019. The matter is transferred to Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court.

The News Room understands that on the day in question, Police ranks on mobile patrol at Wash Clothes, Mahaicony Creek, saw Das on a wooden boat.

It is alleged that that Das threw the firearm overboard after spotting the Police; the ranks managed to retrieve the firearm and arrested him.
