Miner, wife doused with gasoline and set on fire while sleeping
A 35-year-old miner Lyndon Joseph and his reputed wife 30-year-old Maria Pereira DaSilva, a Brazilian national, were doused with gasoline and set on fire while sleeping on Thursday morning by a known suspect.
The News Room understands that both Joseph and his wife received 80% burns about their bodies and are currently hospitalized in a serious condition at the Bartica Hospital.
The incident occurred at about 4:00hrs at the Toroparu Backdam in the Mazaruni Mining District Number 3, Region Seven. Joseph is originally from Jango Town Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara
According to information received, Joseph and his wife were at a function on Wednesday night at the Toroparu Landing when he received information that the suspect was at his camp.
The businessman and his wife returned to the camp and confronted the suspect; it is alleged that Joseph dealt the man several lashes to his body with a cutlass.
Police were told that the suspect bolted and later returned at about 04:00hrs Thursday and threw gasoline on Joseph and his wife and set them on fire.
The suspect escaped after committing the horrific act.
