Emergency works have begun on the Demerara Harbour Bridge and could be completed by sundown today, Minister of Public Infrastructure has said.

Patterson was speaking on state radio when he made the announcement.

The bridge was closed to vehicular traffic after a barge and tug slammed into a section towards the western end, shifting the spans which connect it.

The Demerara Harbour Bridge, connected by 61 spans, is the only means by which vehicles can cross the River to either get to East Demerara and West Demerara.

The speedboat service opened just under one hour earlier than the usual start at 06:00 hrs and could be extended beyond the usual cut off time of 18:00 hrs.
