Pele FC produced a fine all-round display to defeat Mahaica Determinators 3-0 when the round-robin phase of the fourth annual Limacol Football tournament continued Tuesday evening at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue.

Goals from Daniel Gibson in the 21st minute, followed by Derwin Geroge in the 52nd and an own goal, virtue of the guilty Keavon Giddings, spur Pele to a win in their opening match of the tournament.

Gibson scored from a terrific leaping header inside the penalty box, which created great screams of jubilation by the camp.

The East Coast Demerara unit attempted some fine comebacks, but they were thwarted by good defending. The other match of the night between Beacon and Pouderoyen was a bit more on knife’s edge as the match ended 1-1.

Eon Sullivan placed the West Demerara team ahead in the 29th minute. It was until the second half the Beacons Unit, who are coached by Gordon ‘Ultimate Warrior’ Braithwaite, found the critical equaliser in the 64th via Wesley Greenidge.

On the opening night of the tournament, Dynamic FC defeated Police B 1-0 with Amuniki Buntin netting in the first minute, while Santos FC cruised to 3-0 triumph over Black Pearl.

The tournament, which in its initial conception catered for 12 teams, was increased to 16 by the Petra Organisation, catering for more Georgetown team given their hiatus of football.

With four groups of four, the top teams in each group will progress to the quarter-finals. At stake will be $400,000 for first, while second to fourth will pocket $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 respectively. Regent Street establishment, WJ Enterprise, is the other sponsor on board.

Matches continue Friday, September 6, at the aforementioned venue. Buxton Stars will play Georgetown Football Club from 19:00h, followed by Fruta Conquerors Under-20 against Northern Rangers from 21:00h.
