Berbice taxi driver arrested in death of vagrant
A Berbice taxi driver has been arrested and remains in custody in the death of a vagrant whom he reportedly ran over.
The Police are yet to ascertain the identity of the victim.
According to reports, at approximately 22:00 hrs the driver of the motor car HC 6742 was proceeding along Main and John streets, New Amsterdam when he suddenly felt an impact and stopped as he believed he had run over something.
The 25-year-old driver exited the vehicle to investigate and discovered a man lying on the roadway with severe injuries to his head.
The victim is believed to be over 50 and was heavily bearded. The man was picked up and taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital in an unconscious state and was pronounced dead on arrival.
The man is said to be a vagrant who was seen frequently in New Amsterdam.
Meanwhile, a breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver but no level of alcohol was detected.
The car remains impounded at the Central Police Station.
